PCOD or Polycystic ovary disease is a women-specific condition that throws her hormone levels out of balance by attacking the ovaries, the pair of reproductive organs that produce estrogen and progesterone hormones. PCOD leads to the production of excessive male hormones, which in turn makes it difficult for women to achieve pregnancy and also leads to frequent skipping of the natural menstrual cycle.
The diagnosis for PCOD involves both a physical exam and diagnostic testing. The diagnostic test involves a simple test that checks for elevated male hormones, and based on the symptoms, the blood test can also be used to evaluate cholesterol, insulin, and triglyceride levels.
